Challenge

Following an internal investigation, Transport Canada (TC) has determined that Unmanned Aircraft Systems (RPAS), more commonly known as drones, could potentially be a good tool to modernize and optimize its surveillance and inspection operations. Therefore, a pilot project was developed with ARA Robotics and TC Navigation Protection Program (NPP) inspectors to determine the feasibility of using this new technology for vessel inspection, wharves, ferry terminals, bridges, etc.

Solution

ARA Robotics has designed a payload that includes a camera and LIDAR sensors that, once installed on a RPAS, can collect precise data, such as georeferenced images, in order to generate 3D renderings.

Result

The result is an advanced monitoring solution that enables accurate, real-time tracking of sites of interest, greatly facilitating the work of NPP inspectors. The 3D models generated provide a lot of interesting information. In addition, the ability to broadcast live footage for the drone allows inspectors located across the country to participate and guide remote inspections.

Qualia now benefit from a system that not only simplifies multi-vehicle routing but also offers an unprecedented 4D airspace perspective. The precision and real-time tracking capability have elevated their RPAS functions, making them more secure and efficient than ever.

RPAS are radically transforming traditional inspection methods, bringing significant improvements in the safety, efficiency and quality of the data collected. These innovative tools minimize the time required for field operations while significantly enriching the amount and accuracy of information collected, thus optimizing the monitoring and decision-making processes.
